Quote of the Day

Found this online tonight and had to share it.
The truly creative mind in any field is no more than this: A human creature born abnormally, inhumanely sensitive. To them… a touch is a blow, a sound is a noise, a misfortune is a tragedy, a joy is an ecstasy, a friend is a lover, a [...]

I Love Austin

Austin is an exciting town. It is rich in the arts, technology, and friendly, colorful people. Their motto is “Keep Austin Weird,” if that tells you anything. At lunch today, I saw this young man passing by. His name was Jonas, and he is a student. Nice kid–soft spoken, polite, asked what blog I’d be [...]

Horror Story Tomorrow Night?

PBS show Frontline will be airing a show about the generation of children currently growing up in an online world. The program, Growing Up Online, appears to be the same shock-value stuff that has been terrorizing parents for years now, at least from the trailer (watch below). Hopefully, this is just an attempt to lure [...]

Opportunity Knocking!

Picked this up off Wesley Fryer’s blog: Korean International school is seeking progressive-minded, “Teacher 2.0″ type educators for 2 year contracts. Humanities teacher/tech integration specialist Clay Burell says the job offers outstanding pay, benefits, and the opportunity to work in a 1:1 Apple environment with highly motivated students and a highly supportive administration. I [...]

Technology Dumbing Down Our Children?

Doris Lessing, the 2007 Nobel Laureate, apparently thinks those of us who are so fervently promoting the use of the web in education are helping create an ignorant generation. In her acceptance speech Friday night, Lessing went so far as to describe the Internet’s resources as “inanities.” Duncan Riley at TechCrunch definitely takes strong offense, [...]

Critical Creators

I had the opportunity to share an overview of Web 2.0 technologies with a group of secondary science facilitators yesterday. As a former science teacher, I knew up front that this can be a daunting task. Science teachers, especially the good ones, are a tough sell. They spend a great deal of time focusing on [...]

Good Start for Class Blog

I wanted to share this new class blog–Science Today. It’s by my geeky science teacher friend, Whitney Isbell. She set the blog up to allow randomly selected students to craft a daily summary of the goings-on in class. We had a couple of hiccups trying to set up student email and accounts. The biggest stumbling [...]

Suffering from Technology?

A recent article in the Berkshire Eagle demonstrates, yet again, that many educators, while recognizing the important contributions of technology to student learning, still hold it in a form of contempt as a distraction and deterrence to the educational process. The article is boldly titled “The student suffers from technology,” and it recounts the struggles [...]
