Banning Sure Is Easy

I was reading an article about yet another school district banning yet another social technology this morning, as Hattiesburg has protected its citizens by banning student-teacher communication via text messaging or social networks. No need to bother wasting precious testing-time crafting creative applications of such tools in order to take advantage of their popularity in [...]

Expand the Capabilities of Firefox with Extensions

Firefox is continuing to grow in user numbers, with over 8 million users downloading the 3rd version of the browser on its June 18th release day, a world record for a software download. The worldwide market share of Firefox topped 19% by the end of June (story). One of the biggest appeals of Firefox for [...]

Hoping to get some assistance from this session with arranging collaborative projects with district’s teachers. We have had only limited success to date. Presenters are Diane Midness (iEARN) and Sharon Betts.

District Best Practices

I have had to do several projects involving putting together examples of Web 2.0 use in our district in the past couple of weeks. I thought I would share a small sampling of them here. They might inspire others to give some of the tools a try.

Reflections on A Year of Change

The school year will be drawing to a close on Thursday. As we meet as an Instructional Technology team tomorrow, I feel it is important to evaluate where we have been, where we are now, and where we hope to go in the future. The year began with high expectations for teacher learning, student learning, [...]

Unique New Social Networking Idea

Thanks to my Twitter friends, I recently found Weblin, a social networking site that has a different approach. Weblin users download a small piece of software that enables them to create a personal avatar that bears a resemblance to a Second Life character. Once activated, the avatar is present at the bottom of the browser [...]

Educator Internet Use

I used the Google Documents survey tool to create a brief survey over the use of Internet tools by educators in our district. Seventy teachers responded. The survey turned out as expected, generally, with a few surprises. Some of the results:
Time spent online away from work:

31% <2 hours
37% 2-5 hours
16% 5-10 hours
16% [...]

TCEA Session: Beyond Blogging and Wikis

Here are the links from today’s session–enjoy! Oh, and be sure to let me know if your favorite sites are excluded. Oh, and no commentary from anyone nit-picking about whether or not a few sites are truly Web 2.0–they are all useful and free, so they all bear mentioning.

New Ning Network for District Web 2.0 Users

Well, I’m trying to get a better grasp on Ning. After hearing some good presentations on Ning at our regional distance learning conference and at Tech Forum, I’d like to see the possibilities in our district. I’ll be inviting district teachers I’ve been working with on using Web 2.0 tools and using it as a [...]
