I Can’t Keep Up!

Just got back to work after the holidays, and I’m catching up on my RSS feeds. Darn that David Warlick! I should never get behind on reading his blogs. I have a lot of new toys to try and explore/implement:

  • Jumpcut.com is a cool site that offers free video editing tools, similar to iMovie or MovieMaker. I’ll have to give it a try in the next few days and write a review.
  • Flock is yet another browser (I can’t resist new browsers, I must admit). This one has some great built-in tools for using sites such as Del.icio.us, blogs, Flickr, etc. In fact, I’m trying the blog tool with this very post. If it actually posts, it will be a fantastically easy method of creating new topics!
  • Sparknotes in an online study tool. It includes study guides for many pieces of literature, history topics, and more. That in itself is fine and dandy, but the REALLY cool thing is that it is accessible in podcast form or (drumroll) as a text message on a cell phone!

I’ve got about 30 more articles to get through, so I’ll probably have more to come. I sure wish Warlick would get some rest every now and again…

  • While some of the on board software on most machines is OK, most of it serves only to keep learning linear. Once students are introduced to PowerPoint, you’ll find a whole class of presentations that look much the same…nothing unique happening.
New and innovative ideas will result from new and innovative tools. As learners (all of us) join together we can’t help but construct new knowledge when we are engaged in the new world of free, cross-platform and collaborative web 2.0 tools.
Welcome to the world of edubloggers. David is certainly my on-line mentor as well, but if you aren’t already, please make sure you are reading Vicki Davis (http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.com/) and Will Richardson (http://weblogg-ed.com/) as well. There are many others too!
I look forward to reading your blog. Kepp it up!

  • Thanks for the input and encouragement, Jeff! I did, indeed, visit the links and add them to my Blogroll. I added your blog, as well–some really useful stuff there!

Our district is very tech friendly but far from profidient with regards to Web 2.0. I’m planning on documenting a lot of our struggles/successes and seeking a lot of input, so please keep visiting and posting. Thanks!
